Section 504 Accessibility Requirements for Medical Practices

Prepare Your Practice for Updated Federal Accessibility Requirements

Medical practices that receive federal financial assistance—including Medicare and Medicaid reimbursement—should be aware of updated Section 504 accessibility requirements. The 2024 Final Rule strengthens protections for patients with disabilities and includes new requirements for accessible medical diagnostic equipment (MDE), such as examination tables and weight scales.

Beginning July 8, 2026, covered practices must have at least one accessible examination table and one accessible weight scale, if those types of equipment are used in the practice. The guidance also outlines limited exceptions and explains when practices may claim undue financial or administrative burden.

This client brief from Sterling Seacrest Pritchard provides an overview of the new requirements and key compliance considerations.
